3 Ways To Create An Employee-First Culture

Written by Leadr Team | Apr 5, 2022 4:00:00 AM

As you’ve probably noticed, human resources is a hot topic right now. With the rise of the Great Resignation, many employers are looking for solutions to the retention problems they may be facing. It can be tempting to roll out various changes hoping something will stick, like adopting a hybrid or remote work model, putting more emphasis on mission, or focusing on diversity and inclusion.

Don’t get us wrong, all of those aspects of work are important and deserve careful consideration and action, but there are three benefits that have proven to be most important to workers when they consider whether to continue at their current place of employment or seek another one.

As you consider what benefits you want to give your team this year, spend some intentional time thinking about these three.

#1: Quality Healthcare Is Crucial

According to a survey conducted by Growmotely, 69% of employees said that healthcare is the most important benefit their employer can offer. With the ongoing pandemic, that’s less than surprising, but there’s more to it than that.

Employees are people, not machines. They need regular, holistic care for their mind and body so that they can come to work as the healthiest version of themselves. Healthy people build healthy teams, and healthy teams build healthy organizations. Investing in quality health plans for your employees directly contributes to the overall success of your mission.

That being said, where do you get started? Selecting quality health plans for yourself and your team can be overwhelming, and we at Leadr are here to help. We believe healthcare is a vital part of people development, because health is crucial to growth.

#2: People Want to Be Developed, Not Managed

There are several studies out there on how important development is to Millennials and Gen Z. In fact, the same Growmotely study we mentioned earlier found that 63% of workers want personal or professional development as a benefit from their employer. People have a hunger to learn and grow, and they want to be a part of organizations that support that.

The idea of creating an entire leadership development program can seem intimidating, but it’s not as much of an undertaking as you might think. Through Leadr software, you can customize learning for your organization by assigning videos, books, podcasts, or articles, along with application questions upon completion. Something as simple as having a quarterly book club with application questions can help your team feel like they’re being invested in and that their growth is important to your organization.

People feel fulfilled at work when they know they are being developed, and it becomes much easier to get your team to buy into the mission when they feel connected to it. Think of employee development and growth as the bridge that connects your people to your organization’s mission.

#3: Intentional Coaching Creates Great Leaders

Just as we mentioned above, people want to be led and developed, not managed, and another way to do that is through coaching and 1:1 meetings. Books, videos, and podcasts are all wonderful tools to have in your leadership toolbox, but there is nothing that can replace intentional time spent with your people.

54% of workers are looking for coaching from their employer, according to Growmotely, and that percentage is even higher when you isolate Millennials and Gen Z. Coaching isn’t effective unless there is dedicated time set aside for it and that dedicated time is consistent. One of the easiest ways to do this is through our favorite tool, the 1:1 meeting. Setting aside intentional 1:1 time between workers and their direct supervisor or manager creates a sacred space where tremendous growth can happen.

If you don’t know where to start when it comes to 1:1 meetings, we’ve got you covered. The Leadr software gives you a place where you can set agendas for meetings, give and receive feedback after meetings to ensure everyone’s on the same page, and every individual can set up a personalized care card that shares their strengths and their struggles. Leadr software is also a great place to set and keep track of goals so your team members know when they’re winning and where they might need improvement. Let us know how we can help you prioritize the 1:1 meeting in your organization this year.
