5 Leadership Thoughts from Tony Robbins

Anthony Jay Robbins is an American author, philanthropist and life coach. Robbins is known for his infomercials, seminars, and self-help books including Unlimited Power and Awaken the Giant Within. He has been honored by Accenture as one of the “Top 50 Business Intellectuals in the World”; by Harvard Business Press as one of the “Top 200 Business Gurus”; and by American Express as one of the “Top Six Business Leaders in the World”. Here are some of our favorites quotes from Robbins:

1. “Quality questions create a quality life.” The quality of your life is not necessarily based on the quality of your circumstances; it’s based on your mental and emotional filters that determine your perception of the outside world. Are you aware of what you focus on most; your primary question in life? Whatever it is, it will shape, mold, and direct your life. Let’s make it a good one!

2. “Identify your problems, but give your power and energy to solutions.” Identifying that you have a problem is only the very first step in taking are of it. Some people stop there and identify what’s wrong, and then complain about it, expecting or blaming someone else to solve it. But leaders don’t do that; they bring in the second half of the quote! Put your effort into finding and then implementing a solution. Taking action is the key to solving your problems. It starts with identifying the problem, then asking the right (quality) questions. 3. “The meeting of preparation with opportunity generates the offspring we call luck.” People that seem lucky generate their own good fortune through four basic principles. They are skilled at creating and noticing opportunities, making wise decisions by listening to their intuition and people they trust, creating self-fulfilling prophecies through positive expectations and habits, and finally adopting a resilient attitude that transforms their current situation into an opportunity to continue preparing.

4. “A real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided.” Simply put: without action, nothing will happen, except by random chance, and that’s not very likely to move you in the direction you want. To get where you want to go, you have to decide where that is and how you will get there, and then you have to go, or take action.

5. “Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.” Asking a question that results in a “yes” or “no” response tends to stop or slow down a conversation. These kind of questions focus more on "if" something can be accomplished (left brain thinking) instead of "how" it can be accomplished (right brain thinking). Empowering questions are open-ended, thought-provoking, challenging, and solution-oriented questions that cause a person to search for answers and new possibilities
